[the real Medusa!]

mosaic making
laying the sections

[laying the face] Mark had applied a layer of tile adhesive to the base with a 3mm-notch trowel while I filled all the spaces between the tesserae with grout.

There was another heart-stopping moment when Malcolm turned the face upside-down between two pieces of wood and gently slid it into position.

Mark is now gently tapping the face section onto the bed of adhesive.
[levelling the piece]

It is important to make sure that each section of mosaic is level, and to line up all the datum lines you have previously marked to ensure you have the top of the design exactly where you want it!
[grouting]

This is a closer look at the process of grouting. You can use a squeegie and clean off the excess with a damp sponge.
[all systems go!]

We soon had a production line in operation - Malcolm running in and out with a new section of mosaic, Dad and I grouting it, Malcolm turning it and Mark laying it in position.

Malcolm is taking a turn at grouting while I operate the camera.

You can see that Medusa now has several segments of snaky hair round her face.
[the final piece]
The brown paper has been carefully soaked away from the central section.

Will the final piece fit?
(It almost didn't! - we had to 'persuade' it gently and push the tesserae closer together.)
